DFAN is a family support network for families of people with developmental disabilities. DFAN provides families of youth with developmental disabilities transitioning to adulthood with information, training and education and advocacy support, as well as a network where they can meet with and support one another.

There are four areas of support offered to families through DFAN:

  1. Networking: Families are best placed to understand the needs of a relative with a developmental disability and have the greatest empathy for other families in similar circumstances. By connecting with each other, families can provide mutual understanding and support, share advice and information and collectively advocate for greater choice and opportunities for their family member with a developmental disability. DFAN provides local opportunities in North Delta, Ladner and Tsawwassen for families to periodically meet and get together.

  2. Information: Families are better advocates when they are fully informed about the choices and opportunities available for their sons and daughters. DFAN aims to keep families informed about the latest policies and practices and endeavours to answer individual queries.

  3. Education: DFAN periodically offers workshops and training opportunities that respond to requests from families within its network. Information is also regularly shared about other workshops and training opportunities offered within British Columbia and Vancouver’s Lower mainland.

  4. Advocacy: Families make the best advocates for their sons and daughters. By providing opportunities for families to connect with each other and offering pertinent information and relevant training opportunities, DFAN believes families will become confident and competent advocates for the sons and daughters. DFAN provides advice, advocacy and support to families as and when needed.
