Kyndred founder Tony Schmand and his wife Lucy dedicated their lives to improving the lives of people with a physical and/or developmental disability.

Tony and Lucy were community-minded individuals who had a vision to create a positive environment for people to live, work and be productive. They were well known in the Lower Mainland for their many contributions to the community, but will be best remembered for their tireless role in advocating for people with developmental disabilities.

Following the passing of Lucy Schmand in 2021, the Kyndred Board approved renaming the annual Kyndred achievement awards to the “Tony and Lucy Schmand Memorial Award". These awards honour our founders Tony and Lucy’s vision and commitment, and have`been awarded each year since 1995.

The Awards recognize the accomplishments of an individual, or a team of individuals, in one or more of the following areas:

  • Personal Achievement
  • Training and/or School Achievement
  • Community Involvement and/or Volunteerism
  • Employment Achievement

Each recipient is recognized at the Kyndred Family Picnic and presented with a certificate acknowledging their achievements.
